Many gym users or athletes will be familiar with the phrase “no pain, no gain”. If we want to grow stronger and faster then it takes effort, requiring perseverance in spite of screaming muscles and weary bodies.

In today’s passage Peter makes a similar case for spiritual growth. The MessageVersion of 4 v 12-13 says “Friends, when life gets really difficult, don’t jump to the conclusion that God isn’t on the job. Instead, be glad that you are in the very thick of what Christ experienced. This is a spiritual refining process, with glory just around the corner.”

Suffering isn’t fun, but if we keep our eyes on the example of Jesus, and follow his way of living then we will see an eternal gain. This isn’t always an easy area to talk about, so some questions for each of us to think about (and maybe discuss with our small groups):

When the going gets tough, what’s your response? Do you face the struggles, or are you inclined to give up?

Can you think of times you’ve gained through suffering pain in your Christian walk? (these could be great testimonies to share in your small group!).

“Don’t get judged for doing stupid things, but get judged for doing the right thing” – how is this a challenge for you?

Nick
