When my children were young, if something didn’t go their way they would often cry to me “It’s not fair!”. Unsurprisingly they didn’t find the benefit of my advice to be very comforting when I responded “Life isn’t fair, but you still need to be fair to others!”

In today’s passage we read about the early Christian church suffering for doing good. Peter is sympathetic to the hurt, but accepts that the good news of Jesus won’t always receive a welcome reception. Repentance requires admitting that we were doing something wrong, and who wants to do that?!

Peter goes on to encourage the church to continue doing good and sharing the good news anyway; in 3 v 13-15 he says “Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed.‘Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.’ But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” There are many aspects of this you may like to discuss further, some suggestions are: What opposition do you face when sharing the good news?

How can you share the good news in spite of opposition?

If we don’t face opposition, does it mean we aren’t sharing the good news enough?
