Giving Up Superiority

In the time of Jesus, the religious authorities were too busy waiting and searching for the messiah, and completely missed him when he was right in front of them.

Today the religious authorities are too busy creating the Good News than declaring and living the Good News already come. I reckon if Jesus came into church-land today we would likely completely miss him too.

We are told the world is under the influence of evil (1 John 5:19) and we see all around us the real struggle in the world between good and evil; coupled with hierarchy, dominance, arrogance and superiority. This is corporate and individual of course. Even as Christians, seldom are we willing to relinquish our hold over ourselves and allow God to enact his rightful place.

The humility displayed by the woman at the well (John 4:5-42) enabled her to hear and respond, whereas the religious authorities of the day were too busy and self- important to hear.

If we too can find it within ourselves to give up our status symbols and judgmental attitudes, we may also be able to hear the call of Jesus more clearly and so respond more faithfully. Jesus broke all kinds of social conventions and barriers in talking to the woman at the well. It could have seriously messed up his reputation as a holy man.

  • When was the last time we were associated with the outcast because we stood with and alongside them? (note: standing with and alongside someone does not mean you must align yourselves with a different way of thinking of beliefs) • Who knows best? Who holds truth? • Do others perceive you as acting superior to them? • Jesus associated himself with sinners. What about you and me?
